Two sisters, raised with the same values, standing on opposite ends of the political spectrum—one MAGA, one Progressive. Are we really that far apart?

Born and raised in South Carolina, steeped in the same family traditions, small-town values, and Sunday morning expectations. Today, she still lives there—Christian, conservative, and rooted in the world we both came from. I live in Washington State now, agnostic and progressive, having left that world behind years ago.

She’s almost 50 with two grown children; I’m nearing 40 with a five-year-old son. Despite our differences, we love each other deeply. And rather than sidestep hard topics, we’ve chosen to lean in—writing to each other about the issues shaping our country and our lives: from the national debt to government efficiency to the meaning of fairness in a democracy.

These emails aren’t about “winning” an argument. They’re about understanding each other, challenging our assumptions, and holding space for the idea that meaningful, respectful conversations—grounded in curiosity and facts—are still possible, even in a world that feels more divided than ever.

Welcome to Letters to My Sister. Whether you agree, disagree, or land somewhere in between, I hope these discussions spark new ones of your own.
